Guide to Purchasing Strawberry Plants

It is not very tough to plant strawberry plants in your home garden. You can purchase strawberry plants either from the nursery near to your home or order them from the online mail-order shops that supply strawberry plants to the customers. Large scale strawberry cultivators normally prefer to order strawberry plants in large containers.

If you have no plan to start a large scale plantation of strawberries, then it is always better to purchase strawberry plants from the local nurseries in your area that are suitable for your local climatic condition. But you will not be able to find different varieties of strawberry plants like the ones you can obtain from a mail-order strawberry plant dealer. In some places these plants are even available at nearby grocery stores for you to buy without taking the trouble of going to a gardener’s shop or a nursery. Make sure that the plants that you purchase from places like grocery shops are of good quality before you buy them.

It is always better to consider a few things before you invest on strawberry plants to make sure that the plants that you are purchasing are good enough to produce mouth watering strawberries that you are expecting from your plant. When you purchase strawberry plants, you can either go for June bearing variety of strawberry plants or for the day-neutral variety of strawberry plants. June bearing strawberry plants is good to be used in desserts. Different varieties of June bearing strawberry plants include mid-season and late-season varieties. You can go for any of these varieties according to your interest. These plants will produce full crops in the next season after the plants are planted in the garden.

When compared to June bearing strawberries, day-neutral strawberry plants will produce small berries that are ideal for canning and freezing purposes. But you will get a lot more berries than the other varieties of strawberry plants from day-neutral strawberry plants. These plants are known for their ability to bear fruits throughout the year. When you go for strawberry plants try to get the plants that are disease resistant to avoid problems like infections to the plants. If available it is always better to buy plants that have been rooted in the pots. The plants that have been grown or rooted in the pot are found to be much healthier than the plants that are grown in beds.

Always choose the plants that look healthy when you select strawberry plants for your garden. Only purchase strawberry plants that are certified by the authorities to ensure that the plants that you receive are free from virus infection. This is important because apart from your strawberry plants, the virus may also affect the other plants in your garden. Plants that look healthy are more likely to grow faster and yield a good crop. Strawberry plants that look ill when you plant may have every chance for them to not perk up. Avoid this situation by selecting only healthy plants for your garden.
